Entrepreneurship and Innovation

The program “Transform your Research into Business” is an initiative of the Campinas Forum Foundation that aims to stimulate the creation of new companies from the results of scientific research and to develop entrepreneurial skills among members of the academy. This year six works from several areas of knowledge were selected. The team from the UNICAMP’s Photonics Integrated Laboratory (LIF) is one of the finalists with its research:

Patent: Integrated optical biosensor, detection method and uses of the biosensor | Department: LPD – IFGW

Responsible Professor: Newton C. Frateschi | Researchers: André L. Móras and Luis A. M. Barea

The basis of this product/service is a patent owned by Unicamp and with three inventors from this team. This patent is an integrated optical biosensor formed by the coupling of a disk and a ring, which allows monitoring, with reduced temperature dependence, changes in any substance, be it chemical or biological, placed on the exposed area of the disk. As inventors, we propose to fabricate hundreds of these biosensors on a chip of a few mm2, enabled by Silicon Photonics, and integrate this chip into a portable, low-cost test module. The dense arrangement of biosensors, combined with analog processing and artificial intelligence techniques, will allow the chip to be “factory trained” for machine learning to detect traces of target agents. This eliminates complex functionalization processes and the use of expensive peripheral equipment, allowing an innovative technology for application in environmental monitoring.
